Changing your category of air transport pilot licence

If you hold an Australian Air Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), you can get an aeronautical knowledge exam credit for a different aircraft category. All you need to do is pass the subject-part exams for the new category.

You must pass all the required aircraft category-specific subject-parts, eg ATPL(A) to ATPL(H), within one window.

You don't have to pass common category ATPL subject-parts within one window, such as:

  • Meteorology (AMET)
  • Navigation (ANAV)
  • Human Factors (AHUF)
  • Air Law (AALW).

This also applies if you hold a full ATPL Theory Examination Credit and have passed all 7 ATPL Aeroplane (ATPLA) or ATPL Helicopter (ATPLH) subject-part exams within one window.

If you do want to change category, you will need to satisfy the normal pre-qualification requirements before you book any exam for your new category.

We do not accept Air Transport Pilot Licence subject passes as an equivalent pass in any CPL subject exam. We also don't recognise flight crew exam credit gained under the licensing system of a foreign aviation regulatory authority.

You can book your exams through Aspeq.

Changing from ATPLA to ATPLH

If you hold an Australian ATPLA licence or an ATPLA Theory Examination Credit, you can get your ATPLH licence. You must pass these subject-parts within one window:

  • Flight Planning (Helicopter) (AFPH)
  • Aerodynamics and Aircraft Systems (Helicopter) (AASH)
  • Performance and Loading (Helicopter) (APLH)

This gives you your ATPLA to ATPLH theory credit.

ATPLH to ATPLA requirements

If you hold an Australian ATPLH licence or an ATPLA Theory Examination Credit, you can get your ATPLA licence. You must pass these subject-parts within one window:

  • Flight Planning (Aeroplane) (AFPA)
  • Aerodynamics and Aircraft Systems (Aeroplane) (AASA)
  • Performance and Loading (Aeroplane) (APLA)

This gives you your ATPLH to ATPLA theory credit.

You also must pass the Australian Instrument Rating (IREX) exam before you complete your ATPLA flight test. You can do this at any time before the flight test.
