Apply for a Part 66 licence

Once you have met all the Part 66 licensing requirements, you can apply:

  • for an initial Part 66 licence or modular licence
  • to add a category or sub-category to an existing Part 66 licence
  • for an aircraft type rating.

Apply for an initial Part 66 licence or modular licence

You must have an Australian Reference Number (ARN) to apply for a licence. Learn how to apply for an individual ARN if you don't have one.

Part 147 MTO training and assessment pathway

If you have successfully completed your Part 66 licence or modular licence category training through the Part 147 maintenance training organisation (MTO) pathway the MTO will notify us on your behalf.

Please apply for an initial issue of a Part 66 licence or modular licence by completing and submitting:

Once you have successfully completed your training (core examinations and relevant practical experience) using our Part 66 self-study pathway, we will have a record of the basic knowledge module exams you have successfully passed as part of your training.

Modular licence outcome

Once you have successfully completed core examinations and relevant practical experience, you can apply for a modular licence.

We will issue your licence with 'exclusions' listed that define the scope of your privileges. Please submit the completed form to us:

  1. Fill out the relevant application form

    Download the applicable form for initial issue of the Part 66 licence you want to apply for.

    Enter your details and complete the relevant sections of the application form. Make sure to save it on to your device.

  2. Email your application

    Once you have filled out the form you can email your application along with supporting documents to the nominated email address on the form.

Apply to add a category or subcategory to your licence or expand the scope of privileges on your modular licence

To add a category or subcategory to your existing Part 66 licence, or to expand the scope of privileges on your existing modular licence, you need to meet the:

  • necessary theoretical requirements
  • necessary practical experience requirements.

To apply to add a category or subcategory, or to expand the scope of privileges on a modular licence, follow these steps.

  1. Fill out the relevant application form

    Download the applicable form for issue of the additional category or subcategory licence you want to apply for.

    Enter your details and complete the relevant sections of the application form. Make sure to save it on to your device.

  2. If applying under our Part 66 self-study pathway, complete your Part 66 basic practical experience logbook

    You must submit the relevant completed practical experience logbook to support your self-study application:

    Your logbook must show evidence of your basic practical experience relevant to the category or subcategory of licence or modular licence you are applying for.

  3. If applying under the CASA Part 147 MTO pathway

    You don't need to supply additional supporting training and assessment material as the MTO is approved to report your outcome to us.

  4. Email your application

    Once you have filled out the form you can email your application along with supporting documents to the nominated email address on the form.

Apply for an aircraft type rating

To get an aircraft type rating on your Part 66 aircraft engineer licence, you need to successfully complete our approved aircraft type rating course. This includes theory and practical specific to the aircraft type.

Before you apply for an aircraft type rating, you need to meet the aircraft type:

  • theoretical requirements - read 66.A.45 of the Part 66 MOS for more information
  • practical training and on-the-job aircraft type training - read 66.A.50 and 66.A.55 of the Part 66 MOS for more information.

You need to complete your aircraft type training with either an:

An MTO, AMO, or other approved maintenance organisation will notify us on your behalf if you have successfully completed your training. This notification will also support your application.

  1. Fill out the relevant application form

    Download the applicable form for aircraft type ratings you want to add to your Part 66 licence.
