We regulate aviation safety in Australia and partner with other agencies to keep aviation safe.
Australia's State Safety Programme
The State Safety Programme (SSP) sets out how we manage and approve aviation safety in Australia. It's the result of the work of a range of government partners, including CASA, as part of the requirements set out by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
The SSP provides a framework for the continuous improvement of aviation safety and there are four key components:
- policy and objectives
- risk management
- safety assurance
- safety promotion.

Government agencies we work with
There are several federal government agencies with roles in providing safe aviation in Australia:
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications provides policy and advice to government, delivers programs, services and fit-for-purpose regulation. This includes:
- advises government on the policy and regulatory framework for Australian airports and the aviation industry
- manages the administration of the government’s interests in privatised airports under the Airports Act 1996
- provides policy advice to the minister on Australian airspace, aircraft noise and emission matters.
Airservices Australia
Airservices Australia provides safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible services to the aviation industry. This includes:
- Australia’s airspace management
- aeronautical information
- aviation communications
- navigation aids and technology
- flight path changes
- aviation rescue fire fighting services.
The  Australian Transport Safety Bureau
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) investigates what happens when things go wrong in air transport safety.
The ATSB:
- independently investigates aviation accidents and safety events
- records, analyses and researches safety data
- fosters safety awareness, knowledge and action.
We have a memorandum of understanding with the ATSB which helps to improve aviation safety.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority 
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is responsible for search and rescue coordination for all aviation incidents.
The Department of Defence
The Department of Defence is responsible for military aircraft and systems. We have 2 agreements with the department:
