Recognition of prior learning (RPL) assessment - (CASA Basics)

Learn about options to gain your licence if you didn’t complete your CASA Basics exams and SOE pathway by the 30 June 2021 deadline.

If you were not able to complete everything to gain your licence, you can now do one of the following:

  • complete a self-assessment to determine what credits for completed CASA Basics exams apply towards the Part 66 Basic knowledge requirements
  • complete an RPL assessment with one of the CASA approved Part 147 Maintenance Training Organisations (MTO), approved to deliver licence category training.

Self-assessment – (CASA Basics)

Mapping our basics exams to the Part 66 basic knowledge modules

If you completed a CASA Basics exam you can undertake a self-assessment.

To conduct a self-assessment, you can review the module tables listed in Annex A of the AMC/GM Part 147. This will determine what credits, from completed basics exams, we accept towards the Part 66 basic knowledge modules.

We only give credit for a module if all the topics contained in the respective module were covered in the CASA Basics exam(s) you completed

No module exam credit is given for partial completion of a module.

RPL assessment â€“ (CASA Basics) via a Part 147 MTO

You must pay to complete your RPL assessments. RPL will give you credit or partial credit for the CASA Basics exams you have successfully completed.

To undergo an RPL assessment, contact a CASA approved Part 147 Maintenance Training Organisation (MTO). They can recognise successful completion of our basics exams toward satisfying the training requirements for a Part 66 licence. They may also offer exclusion removal training.

For licence category training through the MTOs, your RPL assessment can be made against the following:

  • Part 66 Module requirements
  • MEA Aeroskills training package competency standards.

Basic knowledge examination standard

All examinations must adhere to the exam format specified in the standard. This is in accordance with the Part 66 basic knowledge examination standard in Appendix II of the Part 66 MOS.

The examination standard doesn’t allow partial credit through part module exams.

Basic knowledge requirements

You don’t need us to verify your credits after you have completed your self-assessment and determined what credits you gained.

We will validate these credits when you apply for a Part 66 licence.

For modules where you gained no credit, you can start self-study of the additional modules you need for the category or subcategory of licence you are applying for. You can do self-study through the Part 66 self-study training and examination pathway.

Once you have the credits or completed your self-study, you then can sit a module exam.
