Safety management systems for aerodromes

Dependent on the type and frequency of aircraft operations occurring at the aerodrome a safety management system, or risk management plan may be required.

Our safety management systems (SMS) page and downloadable SMS resource kit provides a practical guide and includes tools and templates to help you create one.

Also see our advisory circular AC 139-16(1) - Safety management systems for aerodromes (PDF, 542. KB). It outlines the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) SMS framework to guide certified aerodrome operators to develop and implement an SMS.

Key components of your SMS

The 4 key components are:

  • safety policy, objectives and planning
  • safety risk management
  • safety assurance
  • safety promotion.

SMS framework

The framework also includes 15 sub elements such as:

  • key safety personnel
  • hazard identification
  • monitoring safety performance
  • training and communication.
